This book holds insights into the craft of bunga moyang through photographs, illustrations, essays, and contextual information about each weaving. More importantly, it is a tribute to and testament of the Mah Meri’s cultural resilience in a rapidly changing world.
Woven from nipa palm fronds and shoots, bunga moyang adorn curative and ceremonial spaces. The distinctive scent of the nipa is favoured by the Mah Meri moyang, guiding them from the upper realm to the human realm to participate in their ceremonies. It also serves as a marker, enabling the moyang to recognise the Mah Meri as their descendants.
This book also offers a deeper understanding of the Mah Meri’s cosmology, spirituality, and belief system, where practices of care are reflected in the expressions of the craft of bunga moyang and its significance to the Mah Meri.
